These geological formations are known as turbidites. Turbidites are a sedimentary formation and these were formed in marine conditions. This photograph was taken in North Cornwall.

A combination of heat and water were able to dissolve minerals in the bedrock and force them into cracks. Here they cooled and solidified to form these quartz veins.
